 (2014)

I am generally interested in migration and movement ecology of fishes and how biotic and abiotic factors influence their survival and reproduction. Past research covered a broad variety of taxa and topics. Currently, I am working in the HydroNet Project under supervision of Dr. Steven Cooke and Dr. Michael Power (University of Waterloo). My research will focus on modelling the entrainment risk of fish (bull trout and burbot) in hydropower reservoirs. More specifically, we will use a telemetry system based on cellphone CDMA technology to study the fine-scale movement of acoustically tagged adult bull trout and burbot in the forebay of the Mica Dam (Kinbasket Reservoir, BC). The fine-scale movement data of these fish will be integrated with modeled intake-induced flow data to investigate how bull trout and burbot behave in relation to the flow field and determine the biotic and abiotic factors associated with entrainment under different turbine operations. The outcomes of this study will help develop operational guidelines to reduce entrainment risk of adult bull trout and burbot in hydropower reservoirs.
